Core Golf’s Wil Bateman wins second Florida tournament
Seven Core Golf students finish in Top 20
ORLANDO, Florida (December 14, 2009)—While temperatures back home in Edmonton dipped to a bone-chilling -46C on Sunday, Core Golf’s Wil Bateman was hot in Florida.
Bateman, 16, won his second junior tournament in Florida in six weeks, capturing the Mystic Dunes Challenge on the Future Collegians World Tour at Mystic Dunes Golf Club in Celebration, Florida.
Under clear skies with temperatures hovering around 25C, Bateman was among seven Core Golf students who finished in the Top 20.
Bateman opened with a 73 and started the final round two shots back, but fired a 71 to tie Charles Bull of England to force a playoff. Bateman drained a 10-foot birdie putt for the win on the first extra hole—his ninth birdie over two days.
At Mystic Dunes, he won the boys 16-18 division. In early November, he won the boys 13-15 division at the International Junior Golf Tour event at the Saddlebrook Resort. In July at age 15, Bateman became the youngest player in Alberta history to make the province’s Willingdon Cup team.
Core Golf students dominate at Mystic Dunes
Core Golf Students dominated the event with seven students finishing in the Top 20, including Ben Murray of Toronto, who was T5 with 147; Mac Boucher of Uxbridge, Ontario, and Evan Littlefield of Thunder Bay, Ontario were T7 with 149 each.
Chase Thurston of Haliburton, Ontario was 151 and T13, Kyle Sayani of Mississauga, Ontario was 152 to finish 15th, and Jeff Hunter of Thunder Bay, Ontario was 153 and T16.
“In only three months working with us, Wil has improved both his mechanics and his tournament play, which shows incredible maturity and hard work,” said Tom Jackson, Director of Instruction for the Core Golf Junior Academy in Orlando, Florida.
“PGA Tour coach Sean Foley, Jeff Hay and I are ecstatic to see seven Core students in the Top 20, which represents our best finish in our four-year history. It gives our students more confidence and momentum.”
Along with other PGA Tour coaches Dr. Craig Davies and Neale Smith, the Core Golf Junior Academy provides intensive instruction, coaching and private education for young golfers who are determined to fulfill their dreams on and off the golf course.
The junior academy is part of the Core Golf Academy which provides high-quality instruction to all levels of players at two Greater Toronto Area facilities: The Academy at Piper’s Heath Golf Club in Oakville, and Willow Valley Golf Course in Hamilton.
