Core Golf trainer's clients turning heads
Craig Davies, born in Niagara Falls, Ont., and trained in Ontario, took on Yang as a client last week before the South Korean teed it up at the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. By Sunday evening, Yang was holding a crystal trophy and a winner's cheque for $1.008-million (U.S.).
"Not bad timing," Davies said yesterday. "Y.E. moves really well, so we are just focusing on his conditioning with some light performance and recovery treatment."
The therapy and fitness work seems to have paid immediate dividends. Yang, 37, scored his biggest career moment since he held off Tiger Woods to win the HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai in 2006.
Another one of Davies's clients, John Rollins, placed second at the Honda Classic. Davies started working with the once-burly bomber at the Bob Hope Classic last January. He treated Rollins's minor shoulder injury and put him on a conditioning program to help him with his balance, stability and mobility.
"It was obviously nice to see the boys finish at the top of the scoreboard," said Davies, who is based in Orlando at the Core Golf Junior Academy in Orlando, Florida with Canadian instructor Sean Foley.
"They are both talented players and should have some great results this year. Not too many people know Y.E. in North America, but I think he is going to turn some heads this year. It is satisfying to see your players perform well at the highest level."
Davies, who's in Miami this week at the CA Championship, also works with PGA Tour players Hunter Mahan, Anthony Kim, Parker McLachlin and Greg Kraft. His part-time clients include Stephen Ames of Calgary and Robert Allenby, who tied for fifth place at the Honda.
