Kirby and Vandermade finish 1-2 in Ontario Girls Junior Championship

It’s been an incredible two weeks of Ontario championship victories for Jennifer Kirby and Nicole Vandermade, students of Sean Foley.

ORLANDO, Florida (July 22, 2008)—It’s been an incredible two weeks of Ontario championship victories for Jennifer Kirby and Nicole Vandermade, students of Sean Foley.

Last week, Kirby, 17, of Paris, Ont., won the Ontario Junior Girls Championship by three shots over Vandermade.

The week before, Vandermade, 18, of Brantford, Ont., won the Ontario Women’s Amateur.

“Jennifer and Nicole are the future of Canadian women’s golf,” said Foley, Director of Instruction at the Core Golf Junior Academy in Orlando, Florida, which was formerly known as the Junior Golf Academy of Canada.

“They are both great athletes and terrific competitors. I am very proud of both them but I’m not particularly surprised to see their hard work pay off.”

Kirby entered the third day of the Ontario Junior Girls at Goderich Sunset Golf Club with a six-shot lead and fired a final-round 72 for the victory last Friday. She finished with a one-over 211 total to edge Vandermade who shot 69 to finish second.

The week before in Belleville, Vandermade captured her first Ontario Women’s Amateur title by edging Mary Ann Lapointe by one stroke at the Bay of Quinte Country Club.

Vandermade started the her final round trailing Lapointe by two strokes, but shot 70 for the victory and a three-day total of 216. Earlier in the year, Vandermade won the Ontario Junior Spring Classic.

Kirby carded a final round 72 to finish in fourth.

Along with Kirby and Vandermade, Foley is coach to PGA Tour player Stephen Ames, the Nationwide Tour’s Greg Owen, Lisa Strom on the LPGA, as well as with other touring pros and top-ranked amateurs and juniors.

The Core Golf Junior Academy is an intensive junior golf development program that integrates secondary school academics and coaching under the direction of Foley, who is also National Coach of the Canadian Junior Golf Association and the teaching professional at the Piper’s Heath Golf Academy near Oakville, Ontario, during the summer.
